Gullies hold water to stop foul air escaping from the foul drainage system.  They are designed to accept waste water from kitchens, utility rooms and ground floor bathrooms or rainwater from paved areas or roofs.
It is desirable that the bottle gully be connected to a manhole, but due to the fact that it is roddable it may be positioned up to 22 metres away from one. However, the Gully must be less than 12 metres from the drain and a set of drain rods must be able to pass right through the junction.
